The material of your implant teeth matters as much as the implants themselves. At Granite Bay Oral Surgery, we use monolithic zirconia as our standard — not as an upsell. Here is why, backed by published clinical research.
Zirconia Advantages
Monolithic zirconia (zirconium dioxide) is a ceramic material milled from a single block using CAD/CAM technology. It is stain-proof, plaque-resistant, 100% metal-free, and withstands over 2,300 Newtons of bite force. Its smooth surface significantly reduces bacterial accumulation — lowering the risk of peri-implantitis, the leading cause of late implant failure. Zirconia prostheses typically last 15–20+ years with proper care.
Acrylic Problems
Acrylic (PMMA) and metal-acrylic hybrid prostheses are cheaper to fabricate but degrade under normal chewing forces. They stain easily, chip and crack frequently, and harbor bacteria at higher rates than zirconia. Many of the failed implant cases we revise at Granite Bay originally used acrylic prostheses. Patients seeking to upgrade from acrylic to zirconia is one of our most common revision procedures.
Cost Comparison
Zirconia costs more upfront but fewer repairs, replacements, and complications make it more cost-effective over a lifetime. See our complete pricing breakdown and financing options.
